This Sweet Isolation

When it comes to a flu virus, this one has taken centre stage. I am reminded of what a friend of mine said; ‘You can close my pubs but you will never stop me drinking in the kitchen.’ The large number of people contracting the virus is quite disturbing, the rate that it is spreading worldwide is down to us living in an ever-shrinking world. Happily, for me I do not travel by air or sea at the moment, well you cannot count the ferry to Studland and the Purbeck. All the schools are closed and it is now up to the parents to make sure their little darlings get an education, tall order considering the time it’s been since they have had any form of learning.

Susan has pointed out that some families will have both parents at home and that is bound to put more pressure on the relationship. I do agree with her, there will be consequences and hopefully not too many breakups. The government has to see that too many restrictions will do more harm than good.

The economy is in a steep nosedive and it is hard to imagine how we can recover from this breakdown of the fundamental basis of a business. I do predict that when those businesses open again it will take a while to get up to full production and they will be very wary of taking on all the people that they laid off. This will sharpen their focus on running a leaner, more profitable company that can withstand another drop in the economy. Brexit, we have taken our eye off that problem and that is not going away.

We have been affected by the steps taken by the government to contain the outbreak, two of our clients have seen such a drop in sales that they have stopped all marketing. We have been postponing events, redesigning graphics and hoping the rest of our clients do not overreact and cancel their spend. This is not the time to bury your head in the sand, now, more than ever, you need to be top of the mind for anyone needing your services. Most people are now working from home and the consequence of that is they will be on the Internet. With that in mind, we are taking the time to make sure all our client's websites and their marketing is totally up-to-date.

A friend of mine said; ‘It is good to see some businesses hanging in there but tough times are ahead, so keep up with marketing and keep your online situation going, else it's a long climb back to the top!’

I do fear this slowdown in the economy will have a lasting effect and difficult times lie ahead. People need to work, food does not magically appear on the dinner table.

On a more positive note, our aim over the next few weeks is to clean up the garden and plant a good selection of flowers, trees and vegetables. Not only is this enjoyable but does prepare us for the summer. Spring will come and we will be ready.
