Christmas

Well, Christmas is tomorrow and it seemed to come around so fast this year? I still have a shirt I was given last Christmas and not worn yet, the labels are still on. As we face Christmas with hope and dread in equal proportions. I have received a number of Christmas cards this year but was really happy to receive a card from a good friend of mine. It was a card with a cottage, a robin with snow and a Christmas tree, a typical Christmas card but then I opened it and a twenty-pound note dropped out with the message saying ‘Buy something nice, happy holidays’. This was not the most original gift but did give me a chance to go out and buy a bottle of whiskey, which goes well with the spirit of Christmas. Whiskey is only £16.00 for a litre at Tesco, every little helps.

I am reminded of something Robert told me about our ability to wait. Children were offered a marshmallow now or wait for a while and get two. Christmas is different, we wait to give that present to the ones we love, hoping it is good enough and then hope we do not receive something we really do not want and have to pretend, always difficult.

Interestingly the children who waited went on to be happy and prosperous and the others learnt to wait and also prospered. Well, we did not learn anything from that except one little boy, he bit a little off his marshmallow and put it down in such a way you could not see he had taken a bite off, he became a politician.

Just a few Christmas greetings first for those scattered around the globe, family and friends. Russell and the Clan in Tanzania, we miss you guys and hope your Christmas dreams come true. The Cooks of Bankside Manor, they posh, happy Christmas, enjoy your time off and do not start redecorating. The Dickens in Australia, stop being so competitive at cricket and let us win a few times, life is not all about winning. Happy Christmas, hope your Christmas wishes come through, we will miss you all. Lady Vivienne, be happy and try your best not to enjoy this festive time. To all my other friends and family, have a good time and drink too much. Let the drink get you before Covid 19 has a chance.

Christmas has become so commercialised and over the top that finding that perfect gift becomes a blur of what the advertisers want us to buy and what we should find. What I like about Christmas is that it makes us focus on the small things, like having your first mince pie or slice of Yule log while watching Christmas 24 with a glass of wine. That moment when Christmas becomes real and now. When being in the moment is about just being with others and enjoying the here and now with the promise of Christmas to come.

To end off I notice Susan has rearranged the books on the coffee table and now we have Hugh Whittingstall - Eat Better Forever next to Bill Gates - How to avoid a climate disaster. Not sure if that has any significance, eating better and climate disaster! Let us not dwell too much on the negative, above them is The Night Before Christmas.

Happy Christmas
